Hip Pain

The hip is a dynamic, weight bearing joint that connects the lower extremity to the trunk. It requires a combination of passive restraint from ligaments and a joint capsule and active control from 27 muscles that cross the hip joint. Dysfunction in the hip can lead to not only hip pain, but also knee pain, foot and ankle pain, and low back pain. Hip pathology can be common in people of all ages and can occur due to an injury from a fall, motor vehicle accident, or sports, or it can occur more gradually and progressively. Some common causes of hip pain include:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Muscle/tendon strains
  • Labrum pathology
  • Ligament sprains
  • Fractures
  • Bursitis
  • IT Band syndrome
  • Joint stiffness
