LSVT-Big for Parkinson’s

LSVT BIG is a therapy that is provided by specially trained therapists to enhance speech and motor function and increase movement in people with Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson Disease is a progressive neurological disorder that makes it difficult for the brain to produce dopamine which in return makes it difficult to perform smooth intentional movements.   This technique is used to address functional difficulties the disease causes. This physical therapy program for Parkinson’s disease consists of specific exercises with large, exaggerated movement patterns that create smoother, more significant, and safer movements. It improves the body’s flexibility, strength, balance and endurance.

Common problems include:

  • Soft voice
  • Mumbled speech
  • Monotone speech
  • Hoarse voice
  • Small, shuffling steps
  • Loss of balance
  • Decreased activity level
  • Fear of going out in the community

Outcomes of LSVT BIG and LSVT LOUD include:

  • Improved vocal loudness
  • Improved speech intelligibility
  • Faster walking with bigger steps
  • Improved balance and daily activities
  • Improved confidence and quality of life!
