Unfortunately, injuries are commonplace in sports. Some require surgery but some are able to be rehabilitated conservative care in physical therapy. For injuries that are able to be rehabilitated without surgery we provide a thorough evaluation to determine the tissue or tissues involved in the injury and any other dysfunction in the adjacent body parts so that we can provide the most appropriate treatment for the patient to return to their respective sport.
For the athletes who require surgery pre-hab, or physical therapy before surgery, has been shown to optimize outcomes both shortly after surgery and in the months to year following their surgery. By decreasing swelling, normalizing ROM, and optimizing strength prior to the rigors of surgery the athlete is better equipped to rehabilitate the injury post-operation. After the injured tissue has been repaired, we evaluate the surgical site and get the rehab started with appropriate exercises tailored to the immediate needs following surgery. We will also contact the physician to obtain the optimal physical therapy protocol to progress range of motion, strength, and function as the tissue heals. When appropriate, we will develop a more specialized strengthening program tailored to the individual’s specific sport demands.
